A driver is a type of software that allows a device (in this case, our ESP32-WROOM-32D) to communicate with your computer’s operating system.
You can think of it like a translator-- It translates the data received from the processor on our robot into information that your computer can understand.
Similar to the Arduino IDE installation process, the steps to install the appropriate drivers on your computer will vary based on the operating system you're using-- Feel free to skip to the installation instructions for your specific operating system!
If you're on Ubuntu (or another Linux distribution), you can skip over the Installing Drivers step entirely!
On the drivers download page, select "CP210x Universal Windows Driver".
Ensure that the file we just downloaded (CP210x_Universal_Windows_Driver.zip) is here.
Right-click this file, and select Extract All…
This will open a new window called “Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders”.
In the newly extracted folder, right-click on the file called “Silabser.inf”, and select Install.
A new authorization window will appear (shown below). In order to install the driver, you must select Yes.
Upon selecting Yes, the following dialogue box should appear. Press OK to finish the installation.
